Tarzan, the Disney musical, closing this coming weekend, is really better than the critics, for the most part, made it out to be. No, it isn't great theatre, by any stretch of the imagination, but it's enjoyable theatre. And, the capacity crowd on the night, I took in a performance, just ate it up. It never ceases to amaze me just how talented people in the acting profession are at the Broadway level--how much they can do; how well they sing, how well they convey their emotions; how well they fly through the air with the greatest of ease; or hang upside down on a vine and belt out a song. This is certainly the case with Tarzan. Josh Strickland is a superb Ape man; Niki Scalera, replacing Jenn Gambatese, scores as Jane, Merle Dandridge is totally believable as Tarzan's ape mother, ditto Rob Evan, as his ape father-what you've never seen great apes sing and talk- why do you think they're called great apes. And Chester Gregory II, is a standout as Terk, Tarzan's best ape buddy. That said, I'd really like to know what did in this family-friendly musical. 'Cause on the face of it, it doesn't make much sense. But, maybe it's not sense, but cents that proved the sticking point.
