TONY AWARD NOMINATIONS

AND THE NOMINEES AREā€¦
By JOE DZIEMIANOWICZ

Jonny Lee Miller and Bertie Carvel in Ink/ Ph: Joan Marcus

Tony nominations announced Tuesday were over-the-top for the underworld.

Hadestown led the field with 14 nods, followed by two other new musicals, Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations with 12, and Tootsie with 11. The Ferryman and To Kill a Mockingbird earned nine nominations apiece.

In a major surprise, To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Aaron Sorkin based the Harper Lee novel, failed to get a nod for best new play. Network, drawn from the Paddy Chayefsky film, was also overlooked in that category. In another snub, Glenda Jackson was overlooked for best actress for her performance in the title role of King Lear.

Nominations for Broadway’s biggest prize can translate to business at the box office, so the campaigning begins now in advance of June 9 when the 73rd annual Tony Awards hosted by James Corden are presented at Radio City Musical Hall.

Alongside The Ferryman in the race for best play are Choir Boy, Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus, Ink and What the Constitution Means to Me. Best musical nominees include Ain’t Too Proud, Beetlejuice, Hadestown, The Prom and Tootsie.

Up for best play revival are All My Sons, The Boys in the Band, Burn This, Torch Song and The Waverly Gallery. Best musical revival is a two-show shootout between a largely traditional take on Kiss Me, Kate and a radically reimagined Oklahoma!
