at the Clurman Theater

The Epic Theatre Ensemble has announced that Kathleen Chalfant will play the lead role of "Riddler" in the New York premiere of Howard Barker's A Hard Heart, at the Clurman Theatre, beginning on October 30, with an opening set for November 11. The show will run through December 2.

Directed by Will Pomerantz, A Hard Heart concerns itself with the ways countries protect their political and human borders. In this case, a country faces invasion. The Queen of the land enlists the Genius "Riddler' to come up with a plan to protect their threatened culture. In doing so, is the sacrifice too great?

Ironically, playwright Barker wrote this play long before 9/11, the Patriot Act, or our recent immigration debate.

Chalfant has been in many Broadway productions, including Angels in America ( Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations), Racing Demon, Dance With Me and Madame Butterfly. Off-Broadway, she's been in Spalding Gray: Stories Left to Tell, Great Expectations, The Last Letter, Talking Heads and Wit, among others. Her films include The Last New Yorker, Kinsey, Murder and Murder and Dream Work. TV work includes: Law and Order, A Death in the Family and The Laramie Project.

Howard Barker's stage works include: Victory, Claw, The Love of a Good Man, The Power of the Dog, Scenes from an Execution, The Castle , Seven Lears and The Europeans.
