Opera star Jerry Hadley has been taken off life support, according to a family spokesman. Hadley has been in a coma on life support in an upstate New York hospital since his apparent life- taking attempt last week.

Hadley, 55, had been found by New York State Police the morning of July 10, in his Poughkeepsie home. There was a gunshot wound in his head, and an air rifle in the immediate vicinity. According to a police spokesperson, Hadley had been having a hard time struggling with severe depression and financial difficulties.

While Hadley recently had been going through a difficult career and vocal transition, earlier in his career, he was at the top of his game. In the 1980s and 1990s, he had triumphed in John Harbison's The Great Gatsby and Myron Fink's The Conquistidor, among others. He had also recorded the role of Gaylord Ravenal in the 1988 Grammy Award-winning [complete] Showboat. And he was part of Leonard Bernstein's late recording of Candide.
