TONY NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED

IT'S ALIVE...HOPE, THAT IS

The Tony Award nominators have spoken and In the Heights nabbed the most nominations, 13, including Best Musical.

South Pacific wasn't too far off the pace, with 11 nods, including Best Revival.Sunday in the Park with George had nine including Best Revival and Gypsy had seven, including Best Revival. The other Best Revival slot was filled by Grease.

August:Osage County (which already owns a Pulitzer), received seven nominations, including Best Play. Rock 'N' Roll, The 39 Steps and The Seafarers each had six nominations including Best Play.

Play revival competition centers around Boeing-Boeing, The Homecoming, Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Macbeth.

Along with In the Heights, other noms for Best Musical include: Passing Strange, Xanadu and Cry-Baby...Did someone say Cry-Baby?

As for some of the individual nominations, Leading Actress in a Play includes Eve Best (The Homecoming), Deanna Dunagan and Amy Morton ( August:Osage County), Kate Fleetwood (Macbeth), S. Epatha Merkerson (Come Back Little Sheba)

Leading Actor in a Play includes Ben Daniels ( Les Liaisons Dangereuses), Laurence Fishburne Thurgood), Mark Rylance (Boeing-Boeing), Rufus Sewell ( Rock 'N' Roll) Patrick Stewart (Macbeth)

Leading Actor in a Musical includes Daniel Evans (Sunday in the Park with George), Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights), Stew (Passing Strange), Paulo Szot (South Pacific), Tom Wopat (A Catered Affair)

Leading Actress in a Musical includes Kerry Butler (Xanadu), Patti LuPone (Gypsy), Kelli O'Hara (South Pacific), Faith Prince (A Catered Affair), Jenna Russell (Sunday in the Park with George)

Direction of a Play noms include Maria Aitken (The 39 Steps), Conor McPherson ( The Seafarer), Anna D. Shapiro (August:Osage County), Matthew Warchus (Boeing-Boeing)

Direction of a Musical nominations include Sam Buntrock (Sunday in the Park with George), Thomas Kail (In the Heights), Arthur Laurents (Gypsy), Bartlett Sher ( Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific).

Stephen Sondheim will receive a Lifetime Achievement Honor and a Regional Tony is going to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater
