at the Zipper Theater, New York

By David Lefkowitz

  Ben Folds

With singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik the toast of Broadway for his Spring Awakening score, another self-proclaimed purveyor of sensitive nerd rock is getting the theater treatment - at least for one night. Ben Folds, former leader of the Ben Folds Five and, since 2000, a solo artist, will be covered by more than a dozen theater notables at a March 26 concert at off-Broadway's Zipper Theater.

Part of the New York Musical Theater Festival's Spring Concert Series (, the Folds fest is a sequel of sorts to last September's sold-out concert, The Unauthorized Musicology of Ben Folds. This year's event, More Unauthorized Musicology of Ben Folds, has booked such legitters as Stephen Bogardus and Chip Zien (Falsettoland), Will Chase (High Fidelity), Bob Stillman (Grey Gardens), Lillias White (a Tony winner for The Life) and American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis(briefly in the Jacques Brel revival). Other Broadway notables participating include Michael Arden, Felicia Finley,Liz McCartney,Manoel Feliciano, Kevyn Morrow, Greg Naughton, J. Robert Spencer, and Michael Winther.

The evening will be directed by Jess McLeod , with Brian Nash serving as musical director. NYMF executive director Kris Stewart and executive producer Isaac Robert Hurwitz  said in a statement that the concert suited their desire to present "musical theater as something unexpected, youthful and exciting."

Well, Folds did once call his former band's music, "punk rock for sissies." His most recent albums are "supersunnyspeedgraphic" and "Songs for Silverman."
