  Heather Goldenhersh

Heather Goldenhersh, a Tony nominee for playing an inhibited young nun in Doubt, takes on another wallflower role next month when she co-stars in Adam Rapp's latest, Essential Self-Defense.

Playwrights Horizons and Edge Theater are co-producing the determinedly bizarre dark comedy, which co-stars Paul Sparks as an attack dummy in the self-defense class where Goldenhersh's character vents her repressed frustrations.

Rapp's resume includes the Pulitzer-nommed Red Light Winter, as well as the acclaimed works, Blackbird, Finer Nobler Gases and Nocturne.

Edge Theater artistic director Carolyn Cantor directs, with her husband, David Korins, designing the set. reported that on Feb. 12, Edge Theater held a celebrity bingo night to raise the $400K needed to mount the production. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Annie Parisse (the imminent Prelude to a Kiss revival) were in attendance.

Beginning performances March 15 at PH's Peter Jay Sharp Theater, Essential Self-Defense opens March 28 for a run through April 15.
