at the New York City Opera

Daniel Reichard, one of the stars ( he plays Bob Gaudio) of Jersey Boys, will be leaving that hit show , to play the title role in the City Opera's production of Candide. It was also announced that Judy Blazer will play the Old Lady. The show will run from April 8-20. The production will be directed by Arthur Massella. Patricia Birch will handle the choreography. Reichard will share the role of Candide with Matt Morgan. Reichard's exact schedule as well as additional casting will be announced at a future time.

Candide, consistently considered one of the best American musicals of all time, has music by Leonard Bernstein, a book by Hugh Wheeler and lyrics by Richard Wilbur. Additional lyrics were provided by John Latouche, Stephen Sondheim and Bernstein. The City Opera production will be conducted by George Manahan. Sets will be by Charles Dunham, costumes by Judith Dolan , lighting by Ken Billington and sound by Abe Jacob

Reichard received a Tony Award nomination for his role in Jersey Boys. Other New York stage credits include The Thing About Men, Forbidden Broadway and Radiant Baby. Blazer has appeared in Me and My Girl, Titanic and LoveMusik on Broadway.

Candide opened at the Martin Beck Theatre( now the Al Hirschfeld) on December 1, 1956. It closed on February 2, 1957, after 73 performances. Its cast included Barbara Cook, Robert Roundsville, Max Adrian and Irra Petina, among others. The show has been revived countless times over the past 50 years.
