In what may prove a harbinger of the Tony Awards, members of the New York Drama Critics Circle have chosen Tom Stoppard's The Coast of Utopia as the best play, and Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik's Spring Awakening as the Best Musical of the 2006-07 season. Announced May 7, the NYDCC Awards also honored the late August Wilson's Radio Golf as best American play.

Stoppard will collect $2,500 for his win, while the estate of August Wilson will receive $1,000 for their awards, which are made possible by a grant from the Lucille Lortel Foundation.

According to New York Post scribe Michael Riedel, the voting for Spring Awakening was nearly unanimous, while Utopia was selected on the second ballot.

Also receiving a special citation from the NYDCC is the current Broadway revival of R.C. Sheriff's war drama, Journey's End.

Currently, 21 reviewers comprise the NYDCC, which has been headed since 2005 by Time Out's Adam Feldman. Though a smaller organization than the Tonys, Drama Desk Awards and Outer Critics Circle, the New York Drama Critics Circle is older than any of them, having been founded back in 1935 at the Algonquin Hotel by such critics and newspaper scribes as Brooks Atkinson, Robert Benchley and Walter Winchell.

Keeping with that tradition, this year's NYDCC awards ceremony will be held May 14 at the Algonquin. is the organization's newly established website.
