The New York Times has reported that opera star Jerry Hadley has apparently attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head with an air rifle. The incident took place in Hadley's upstate New York home. According to the paper, Hadley has suffered serious brain damage, is on life support and is not expected to recover.

Mr. Hadley, 55-years old, had been a frequent performer at the Metropolitan Opera. In fact, from 1987 to 2002, he had starred at the Met in such productions as Cosi Fan Tutte, The Rake's Progress, La Traviata, and The Great Gatsby, for which he created the title role. Another role he created was the lead in Paul McCartney's The Liverpool Oratorio. Recently, however, roles dried up and he was reportedly having financial difficulties.

On television, Hadley sang the role of Gaylord Ravenal in a 1988 documentary The Showboat Story. He also appeared in the 1989 production of Candide, conducted by Leonard Bernstein and in the 1993 PBS production of Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall. He was the recipient of three Grammy Awards.
