Though efforts to bring a musical version of Marty to Broadway have failed so far, another teleplay by Paddy Chayefsky looks to be getting the tuner treatment - with Broadway eyed for Spring 2008.

The Catered Affair, filmed the year after the feature-film version of Marty and also starring Ernest Borgnine (alongside Bette Davis and Debbie Reynolds), is being adapted into A Catered Affair, by librettist Harvey Fierstein and composer-lyricist John Bucchino. San Diego's Old Globe Theater will host the show's pre-Broadway tryout in September `07. John Doyle, of the newly scaled-down Company and Sweeney Todd, directs.

The Catered Affair was a kitchen-sink drama about a poor Bronx family facing a big decision: they can either spend their nest egg on a huge wedding for their only daughter, or dad can finally get his hack license. Originally scripted for the Philco Television Playhouse in 1955, Affair was adapted the following year into a screenplay by Gore Vidal and filmed by Richard Brooks.

Author Fierstein, a quadruple-Tony winner for both penning and starring in Torch Song Trilogy, acting in Hairspray and writing the book for La Cage aux Folles, will star in the Broadway Affair, to be produced by Jujamcyn, Harvey Entertainment/Ron Fierstein and Richie Jackson. To date, Bucchino is best known for his cabaret material as well contributing the jazz-era "Lavender Girl" segment to 3hree. His songs have been covered and collected on the CD compilations, "It's Only Life" and "Grateful, The Songs of John Bucchino."
