AN INSPECTOR CALLS
at the Novello

THE REAL INSPECTOR... HOUNDS
By ROGER B. HARRIS
Published May 27 2009

Stephen Daldry's award-winning production of An Inspector Calls will come calling in the West End on September 22. The J.B. Priestley melodrama will play the Novello. Casting for the production has not yet been announced. The play is designed by Ian MacNeil with lighting by Rick Fisher. Music is by Stephen Warbeck.

Priestley's play, originally produced in 1946, was first revived by Daldry at the National. It transferred to the West End and subsequently crossed the pond, to be a big hit on Broadway. Daldry's neo-expressionistic re-look at Priestley's work has played over 4,000 performances across the globe. It has won three Oliviers and four Tonys.

The thriller revolves around the death of a young working girl and the studied indifference to that death of the people she worked for. Onto the scene comes a "take no prisoners" Inspector to ferret out the details and circumstances of the death. Much is revealed and old assumptions are forced to crumble.
