THE LORD OF THE RINGS
at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane

END OF A JOURNEY
By Roger B. Harris
Published March 14 2008

Peter Howe, James Loye and Michael Therriault

The Lord of the Rings, the musical based on J. R. R. Tolkien's trilogy, will drop curtain come July 19. The show, which is at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, began performances on May 9, 2007 and opened on June 19. It will have played 492 performances when it ends. The production is, reportedly, the most expensive in West End history.

Matthew Warchus is the director , the book and lyrics are by Shaun McKenna and Warchus and the music is by A R Rahman and the Finnish folk group Varttina with Christopher Nightingale. Peter Darling handles the choreography, with production design by Rob Howell.

Reviews were mixed at best, with most critics bemoaning the sheer tonal deafness of the show. London Theatre News reviewer Clive Hirschhorn commented: It's  Wagner without the music-a real liability in what is, after all, a musical."
